Everything you need to know about Adjacent

Learn the rules and try a practical solving tip.

What is Adjacent?

Adjacent is a number puzzle. Fill each row and column with the numbers 1 to N, where N is the number of cells in each row. Orange bars and their absence provide clues about neighbouring numbers.

Rules

  • Use each number from 1 to N exactly once in every row and column.
  • An orange bar means the two neighbouring numbers differ by exactly 1, such as 3 and 4.
  • Without a bar, neighbouring numbers must differ by at least 2.
  • These clues apply to horizontal and vertical neighbours.

Tips

Tip: On a 4×4 board, a cell containing 1 can only have 2 across an orange bar. Without a bar, that neighbour cannot be 2.
